Spring Meeting 2017

MICROGLIA IN DEVELOPMENT AND DISEASE

The 4th and 5th of May 2017

Aims of the meeting

Microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain, are probably the most versatile cells of the central nervous system. During development they take part in shaping the brain while performing a homeostatic job in adulthood. In case of injury of any kind, microglia are the first in line to protect neurons from further damage. Dysregulation of these cells is involved in neurological and psychiatric disorders. Microglia biology will be the central topic of the spring BSCDB meeting, with topics ranging from ontogeny, the remarkable phagocytic capacity and their role in Alzheimer’s’ and Parkinson’s Disease.

The upcoming Spring meeting on microglia in development and disease is organized by the Belgian Society of Cell and Developmental Biology (BSCDB) in collaboration with the European Graduate School of Neuroscience (EURON). On the first day, a satellite EURON workshop (May 4th) is scheduled to introduce senior master students, PhD students, and junior postdocs into the microglia field. On the second day, international keynote speakers and selected presentations of young scientists cover the current state of the art on microglia biology during the BSCDB symposium (May 5th). The best two posters will be rewarded with a BSCDB poster prize during the poster session.
